M. Gilchriese - April 2001 Disk Sector Status

M. Gilchriese - April Technical Status Three prototypes to current dimensions(8-sector disks) except for tube length made or will be done by next week. One with CGL and two with epoxy(AIT EG7658) between Al tube/faceplate. So far, sectors made with CGL meet all specs. Epoxy is backup in case we find difficulties during production. Don’t have time to completely qualify sectors with epoxy before PRR. Has been little additional testing in last months. –“Loss of coolant” test at room temperature of irradiated sector. Sector reached 135 o C, steady state, held for some minutes and then coolant turned on. Thermal performance still OK. –Irradiated sector piece exposed for weeks to 100% C3F8 vapor at room temperature. No effect seen in thermal performance. All old(FDR) requirements met by baseline design

M. Gilchriese - April Technical Status(2) Thermal shock to -35 needs to be done This would require new set up(LN2 vapor?), that doesn’t yet exist. Also use for thermal cycling?

M. Gilchriese - April Disk Sector Production Page

M. Gilchriese - April Status(1) Requirements(Gil) –Revised version sent to Marco –Needs final checking, global changes(eg. fault conditions) Interfaces(Eric/Gil) –FDR version “marked up”. Needs new drawings, grounding defined..a number of changes Drawings(Dave, Jon, Eric) –Preliminary set of drawings complete(Dave, Eric, Jon) –Detailed list of outstanding fabrication and tooling drawings/figures made(Eric/Jon) and in progress. Next complete update by end of May? –Tolerances and other information(Eric). Will be largely included in revised drawing set. Schedule(Gil, Jon, Mike) –Preliminary baseline schedule complete. Next update by mid-June, for PRR.

M. Gilchriese - April Status(2) Component purchases(Jon, Gil) –Production tubes on order, delivery by June –Production carbon-carbon plates ordered, first inspection(before heat treatment and CVD) complete(OK), processing progress. –Foam just ordered –Miscellaneous materials(adhesives, etc) to be ordered –Mounting button material still not finally fixed yet. PEEK, C-filled PEEK or C-C. Vendor QC/QA –Allcomp visited, plates inspected, travellers with each plate OK –Allcomp will also make CVDed foam. QC to be worked out but is essentially weight of each piece. –No other significant vendor QC/QA

M. Gilchriese - April Status(3) QC/QA at LBL(Gil, Jon) –Preliminary ATLAS part number ID made –Draft individual travellers complete for aluminum tubes faceplates assembled sectors –Will be batch travellers(not each part) for fittings, strain relief pieces, hardpoints –Detailed QC procedures for each piece/assembly(what to measure) largely exist and have been tried on prototypes but need to be formally documented in “how to” manual. –Summary QC/QA document for PRR needs to be written, mostly referring to these more detailed procedures, etc.

M. Gilchriese - April Status(4) Production personnel –Primarily Jon and Tom Current plan –Start pre-production in July –Produce enough sectors to populate one disk –Test –Go ahead for full production Jan. ‘02
