Southern Resources Mapping Corporation Reliability. Quality. Integrity - Since 1974 COLOR INFRARED FAILING SEPTIC TANK IDENTIFICATION STUDY

What is it? How’s it work? Southern Resources Mapping Technology has been around for decades. (EPA report 1985) Color-Infrared (CIR) - vigorous growth = dark red Early spring – Emergent grass Failing septic systems - CIR signature Failure types: Surface:above ground flow Surface:above ground flow Seasonal:indications of wastewater, Seasonal:indications of wastewater, no surface accumulation Seasonal stress:enhanced vegetation Seasonal stress:enhanced vegetation

Study Area Southern Resources Mapping Three mile radius of the Lakes of Tuscaloosa (Tuscaloosa, Nicol, Harris) Approx. 167 sq. mi.

Procedure Southern Resources Mapping March 19:Acquired CIR photography

Southern Resources Mapping 14 flight lines 151 photos at 6,300’ 1”=1000’ Neg scale Each pixel = 0.95’ Each photo = 272MB

Procedure Southern Resources Mapping March 19:Acquired CIR photography Mar 19 – May 14:Sample set identification (20 sites)

Southern Resources Mapping

Procedure March 19:Acquired CIR photography Mar 19 – May 14:Sample set identification (20 sites) May 25:Field inspection of sample set (City and County Health Department)

Procedure Southern Resources Mapping Location Classifications Do not mark:Discoloration, but no distinctive pattern Do not mark:Discoloration, but no distinctive pattern Possible Failure:Some evidence of field lines/tank spot Possible Failure:Some evidence of field lines/tank spot Probable Failure:Strong evidence of field lines/tank spot Probable Failure:Strong evidence of field lines/tank spot Likely Failure:Strong evidence of field lines/tank spot Likely Failure:Strong evidence of field lines/tank spot Over-ground flow

Procedure Southern Resources Mapping March 19:Acquired CIR photography Mar 19 – May 14:Sample set identification (20 sites) May 25:Field inspection of sample set (City and County Health Department) May 24 – Sept 10:CIR examination and report prep

Findings Southern Resources Mapping

Findings Likely Failures Probable Failures Possible Failures CIR investigation found: Health Department investigation: March 7, failing, 1 vacant 4 failing, 2 false positive, 1 vacant Catalogued for future use

Findings Southern Resources Mapping Likely Failures – 100% success rate Likely and Probable Failures – 78% success rate Nearly 100% success rate of locating septic systems
