 Definition: A method of organizing numerical data in order of place value. The 'ones digit' and the 'tens digit and greater' of each data item is separated as leaves and stems respectively. You would use this display when there are large amounts of numbers to analyze.  If you wanted to find out the ages of your relatives at a family reunion, you could use a stem and leaf plot to visualize the data.  If you want to visualize one idea like the example above, you will only need one set of data, but if you wanted to compare two sets of data, you could use a back-to-back stem and leaf plot. This is a good example except, it doesn’t have the 1, 2, 6, and 7 (on the stem side) in their respective places which you need even if there is no “leaf” digits to go with that “stem.”

1. Billy has not taken the Chapter 6 Test. Will the class median change with Billy’s test score added to the data? , 5, 7, 8, 8 0, 2, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 6, 8 0, 1, 6, 6, 6 One’sTen’s Chapter 6 Test %’s for Pd. 5 Honors Algebra 2. How many more test scores above 82% have to be added to the data, to raise the class’s median?

 1. Yes, if the score is greater than 82.  2. There will need to be at least 1 test score above 82% for the class median to rise.

Advantages:  You can see all of the data in a small space.  Data can be organized faster. Disadvantages:  You have to include ten’s digits intervals where they do not have one’s digits.  Therefore, it isn’t good for displaying a wide range of data.
