Topic 1: 200 Question: Who was Frederick Douglass Answer: He was an escaped slave who fled North and lived with his free wife. While enslaved, he managed to learn to read and write. He became an icon of the abolitionist movement for his moving speeches denouncing the institution of slavery. Also, he published a newspaper called the North Star (For additional information see page 245)

Topic 1: 400 Question: Define Gradualism Answer: In this theory/strategy for ending slavery, Slaveholders would be compensated for their loss of slave(s) Supporters of gradualism thought this would give the South’s economy time to adjust to the loss of enslaved labor This strategy would end slavery gradually(slowly) (see page 242)

Some were bankers that feared with the ending of slaver southern farmers would not be able to pay back debts owed to Northern banks. Others feared war.
