Grade 9 Science Tutorial Wednesday, Oct. 14

Tutorial Overview This will be a shortened tutorial as I am currently in a Video Conference with some teachers from around Rockyview. Progress reports are being sent out this week. Please have your Key Parents me to confirm when they have received them. Grade 9 Science lessons are now near the end of the unit, but some students are missing many assignments. Use your time to catch up. This tutorial will complete the work started in last week’s tutorial. When you finish, work on Sci. 9 lessons 5, 6 & 7 and prepare for the mid-unit review quiz on Topics 1-5.

Inherited Characteristics What sorts of characteristics can humans inherit? What is a Dominant Characteristic? What are some examples? What is a Recessive Characteristic? What are some examples?

Advantages of Inherited Characteristics What are some characteristics the following organisms can inherit that might help them to be successful in an ecosystem? 1.A clown fish – 2.A race horse – 3.Taber corn – 4.The Lodgepole Pine -

Technologies Impact Why might humans want to influence the breeding of plants and animals? What are some ways that humans use technology to influence the breeding of plants? What are some ways that humans use technology to influence the breeding of animals?

Dangers of Human Interference How might human interference in the breeding of plants and animals be a BAD thing for an ecosystem? Use the internet to find an example of when human interference in the breeding of plants or animals had a negative impact on an ecosystem (include a link: please use “tiny url”)

Benefits of Human Interference How might human interference in the breeding of plants and animals be a GOOD thing for an ecosystem? Use the internet to find an example of when human interference in the breeding of plants or animals had a positive impact on an ecosystem (include a link: please use “tiny url”)

Summary Organisms can reproduce Sexually or Asexually This spreads importance characteristics among an organisms’ offspring. Some inherited traits are positive, some are negative. Humans can use technology to influence the breeding of some organisms. What do you think? Should humans use technology to influence the breeding of organisms?

Things to do; Complete Lesson #5 Work on lessons #6 and 7. Perform “Survival: The Ultimate Advantage” page 52 to see another example of adaptations helping an organism to be successful in an ecosystem. PREPARE FOR THE UNIT REVIEW QUIZ!

Reproductive Benefits Use your notes, textbook, and the internet to complete the following chart. Type of Reproduction AdvantagesDisadvantages Sexual Asexual
