Geography Section 2 Chapter 1 Maps and Globes
Globes Globes are great, but won’t fit in your pocket. Can’t make it large enough to see your community, street etc. Just not convenient
Globes : Show correct shape and size, just not scale Problem with flat maps are the distortions
What is a Distortion? A change in the accuracy of the shape, distance or size in a map.
Some Types of Maps Mercator Projection Robinson Projection Interrupted Projection
Mercator Projection Shape of landmasses and ocean areas similar to a globe Areas near the poles look bigger than they really are. Useful to navigators Longitude and latitude lines appear straight Conformal map - correct shape but not true distances or sizes
Interrupted Projection Shows correct shapes Not true distances or sizes Gaps in the picture of the world Shows size and shape of land Hard to figure distance
Robinson Projection Shows the size and shape of most of the land accurately Sizes of oceans and distances are fairly accurate Distortions around the edges of the map
Parts of a Map Compass Rose Cardinal directions – North, South, East, West Scale – distance in inches to miles on a map Key or legend - explains the symbols Map title Grid – parallel and meridians
