After World War I and AFTER the Revolutions ’s

Problems  A nations problems can drive nationalism, promote xenophobia.  “Us” V. “Them”  Germany will deal with this.  Unemployment, destroyed economy, a shamed nation will lead to the rise of nationalism.  Romantic promises of the “Good ‘ol Days!”

Literature of the 1920’s  The war had been so brutal that new authors wrote books and created a philosophy that questioned accepted ideas about reason  People became disillusioned with religion and the prospects of the future  Existentialism was born-”no meaning to life, each person creates his or her own meaning in life through choices made and actions taken”

Revolution in Art  Surrealism-”an artform that sought to link dreams with real life  Jazz-Developed primarily by African Americans in New Orleans, Chicago, and Memphis.

Economic Depression  After World War 1, Europe was financially devastated by the war. The value of money in Germany was worthless(See page 471)  However, in the United States, the 1920’s saw a rise in new freedoms for women and EVERYONE had money!  Known as the “Roaring 20’s”  The Economy will also improve in Germany in the mid 1920’s pushing away themes of nationalism. Then…  However, 1929 would see the collapse of the American economy and usher in a period of time known as the “Great Depression”  Depression is an economic cycle

Government  New democracies rose in Europe following World War 1; old monarchies and empires were gone and a new era where democracy might take root emerged  Political Parties emerged throughout these countries, LOTS OF THEM!  How might this make governing difficult?  The rise of “Coalition Governments”-This is a temporary alliance of several parties to create a majority. They did not last long, typically
