Data Support: Maximising Resources Research Laboratory NEREUS: Data Library for Economic Researchers

How it started ►The provision and support of speedy access to data and information is strongly associated with successful research output ►There exists a strong causal link between well-funded data support and international research reputation “Returns to the Delivery and Support of Information Services for Academic Research and Learning: the importance of data and information support” Adam Lubanski, MPhil 1999 Research Laboratory NEREUS: Data Library for Economic Researchers

Electronic Library ►Saves time No need for individuals to download data ►Saves money Central storage of data saves on hardware costs Central storage minimise duplicate ordering ►Improves research quality Data staff ensure that data is always most up to date release ►Encourages equality of access Researchers always have access to a wide range of resources even if they do not have personal contact with other data users ►Improves security Licensing can be controlled and supported centrally Research Laboratory NEREUS: Data Library for Economic Researchers

Expert Support ►Saves time Help to identify suitable data resources quickly Centrally managed ordering and licensing of data Support staff have personal contacts with data providers and will often get queries answered faster than an individual ►Improves research quality Information about possible problems with datasets can be circulated to staff who might not always discover/ pick up on the problem A wider range of data resources are made available to staff ►Encourages equality of access All staff have access to expert support/ advice, not just those with personal contacts among data users ►Improves security Provides expert advice on confidentiality/ disclosure control. Research Laboratory NEREUS: Data Library for Economic Researchers

Advocacy and Communication ►Improve communication and feedback between data users and data providers Improves data quality Improves research standards ►Act as a neutral advocate for academic data use ►Focus for responses to consultations ►Focus for campaigns to preserve data access Research Laboratory NEREUS: Data Library for Economic Researchers
