Presentation transcript:

Biology 9/11/13 Mrs. Turgeon “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill DO NOW: Get out your 3-ring Biology binder and wait quietly for instructions

4 Respond to the following in your notes 1. What units do you use to measure: a.) length? b.) mass? c.) volume? 4 Copy the text in your notes 3 times: 4 Kilo-hecta-deka-base unit-deci-centi-milli 4  You will need to memorize this! It will help you in all future science classes!

What are Metric Conversions? 4 Sometimes we need to change from one measurement to another. 4 This is usually done because the unit that is used is either too big or too small for that type of measurement.

TOO BIG !!! 525,568 millimeters Sometimes the number is too big for the unit being measured.

Too Small km Sometimes the number is too small for the unit being measured

How Do We Fix This Problem? We can correct these problems by doing a process called Metric Conversion. Metric Conversion: changing from one unit of measurement to another.

Biology 9/13/13 Mrs. Turgeon “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” – Winston Churchill DO NOW: Put everything away except for your pencil and be ready for Our first ACT practice test! ( woo-hoo! This is fun! ) Announcement: Our first Science Club meeting is in room 312 (Here) on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4:00. Put this date in your agenda book if you would like to join!

Biology 9/13/13 Mrs. Turgeon 4 Agenda 1. ACT practice quiz 2. Finish Volume Lab 3. Practice with the metric system

Staircase Method (copy this) Kilo- Hecto- Deka- base units Deci- Centi- Milli- Base units g, m, L  Larger units Smaller units  Move up the stairs, decimal moves to the  Move down the stairs, decimal moves to the 

Using the stair step method 1. Find your starting step 2. Count the # of steps it takes to get to the step that you need to stop on. A. If you move to the  (downstairs) the decimal in the first measurement moves that many places to the . B. If you move to the  (upstairs) then the decimal moves to the . 3. Fill any empty places with zeros.

The Stair-step Kilo- Hecto- Deka- base units Deci- Centi- Milli- Grams, liters, meters

mm = ? m Millimeters are a very small amount of distance. You would not want to measure a large distance in a very small unit. Kilo- Hecto- Deka- base units Deci- Centi- Milli- Base units g, L,m Moved 3 to the  m

km = ? m Kilometers(km) are a fairly large unit of distance. You would not want to measure a small distance in a large unit, so we need to convert it to a smaller unit, the meter. Kilo  m is 3 steps to the right Therefore, km becomes 6.54 m.
