The Interview ELL 3044

Warm up 1. Tell me about yourself. 2. What are your weaknesses? 3. What do you know about our company? 4. Where do you see yourself in five/ten years? 5. Why did you leave your last job? 6. Why do you want to work here? 7. Why should we recruit you?

2. What are your weaknesses? You can answer this question honestly but try to discuss non-essential skills for th e job. For example, if you are a nurse, might say yo u are not good at doing group presentations. You would not say, ‘My weakness is talking with patients.’

3. What do you know about our company? It’s important to have some information about the company you are applying to. In part icular if you can say something that highlights your ability and how you can fit in the company. For example, if you could tell them about about a project that you may be suited.

4. Where do you see yourself in 5/1 0 years? Employers want to know you won’t be moving on to another job right away. Don’t discuss your goals for returning to school or having a family. A good example may be, “Once I gain additional experience I would like to move on to management.”

5. Why did you leave your last job? Don’t badmouth your last employer, regardless of why you left. Instead change y our answer to something like, “I found mysel f bored with work and looking for more chall enges” or “I’m re-locating to this area due to family circumstances”.

6. Why do you want to work here? Interviewers will be listening for answers that show your knowledge about their company. Your answer should stress what y ou can add to their company. Even if it’s true, do not mention salary, hours, or commute as the main reasons you want the job.

7. Why should we recruit (hire) you? The best way to answer is to give examples why your skills and accomplishments make you the best candidate for the job. Look at the job advertisement and match yo ur skills with what it’s asking.

C. Choose the best answer to t he questions below. Which one would you choose?

D. Interview Video. What are some other questions you heard on the video? What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest accomplishment? Describe a difficult work situation and what you did to overcome it? Do you have any questions for me?

Role Play You will be split into groups. Look at your role playing card but do not show anyone else! Employers will be 2 people. Employees will be 1 person. If you are an employer, you need to make the name of your company. If you are an employee, you will have to look at your strengths and weaknesses and find a job. Employers will interview employees to find the best employee for their company. For employees, if there is any information missing on your role playing card, you can make it up.
