10.9- Civil Rights Laws Civil Rights Act of outlawed discrimination against any individual “because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin”. Proposed by John F. Kennedy but passed by Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy’s assassination.
Voting Rights Even after the Civil Rights Act was passed few African Americans in the South could vote due to unfair election laws. Without the vote, black citizens could not expect much progress toward equal rights MLK organized the march from Selma to Montgomery to encourage African Americans to register to vote. They were attacked along the way by Alabama State Troops
Voting Rights Act of 1965 Outlawed literacy tests and other means used to keep black voters from voting. It gave the Federal government the power to send officials to the South to oversee elections and make sure they were fair. The number of black voters doubled.
