Preventing Accidents: Backing Safely Omnisource Safety

CAUSES OF BACKING ACCIDENTS Backing when you don’t need to. Can’t see where you’re going. Didn’t take into consideration the size of the vehicle. Not used to backing. Weren’t prepared. Bad info.

Introduction Accidents involving backing accounted for 10% of OmniSource Transportation incidents in the last year (12/122) All backing accidents can be prevented Backing accidents typically do not cause major injury or damage; however, Frequency Breeds Severity! When we have several small accidents, they all add up!

G.O.A.L. Try to get a mental picture of the area When in doubt, remember GOAL- Get Out And Look! Plan your course Use horn, flashers, hand signals, etc. Is your back-up alarm operable and audible?

Smart Backing Whenever possible, position yourself to avoid backing If you must back, take your time Slow is smooth, Smooth is fast – Rushing while backing decreases reaction time and increases your chances of hitting something or someone. Remember, ALL backing accidents can be prevented It is up to the driver to make this happen!

Using A Spotter In some scenarios, it might be best to use a spotter Here are some basic guidelines to remember when using a spotter Make sure the person is reliable and capable Agree on hand signals before backing Open windows and turn off the radio Always maintain visual with the spotter In the end, responsibility lies with the driver

Unexpected Obstructions When checking the area, look up to make sure you have overhead clearance, know what is around your truck Continually check mirrors while backing to maintain a 360 visual of your backing area If you must wait several minutes after performing your initial check of the area, get out and double-check before you move Better to check twice and be safe, than check once and end up in an accident

You Don’t Want To Be This Guy!

Goal: “No backing accidents in 2014!”
