Being Prepared for Emergencies

 First Aid – immediate care given to injured and sick.  How many of you feel you would know what to do in an emergency?  How many of you think you’d remain calm?  How many of you have been in a situation where there has been an emergency?

1. Wear disposable latex gloves 2. Wash hands with soap & water after removing gloves. 3. Cover open wounds & avoid contact with other person’s blood. 4. Dispose of bodily fluids from victim. 5. Don’t touch your mouth, eyes, or nose while caring for person.

1. Confusion or loss of consciousness 2. Difficulty breathing 3. Chest/abdominal pain that won’t go away 4. Severe bleeding that won’t stop 5. Vomiting blood 6. Seizure or severe headaches 7. Slurred speech 8. Head, back, or neck injuries

 Good Samaritan Law – protects people who give first aid as long as they act responsibly and use good judgment. If conscious ask if you can help. If it is a child or they are unconscious – it is implied consent that you can help.

1. Immediate care given to injured and sick. 2. Situation where a person’s life is in danger. 3. Guidelines that protect people from disease spread by blood and body fluids. 4. The law that protects people from getting sued when giving first aid. 5. If a person is a child or unconscious, why can you give first aid.
