Welcome to Junior High School! Kristen Peterec Guidance Counselor

What is different in 6 th grade?  7 class periods each day  Classes will be 50 minutes long  Different teachers for each class  Won’t be with the same students the whole day

Bell schedule: 6 th – 9 th grades  In order to have a 7-period day where the classes can be long enough, the day will be extended for grades 6 th – 9 th by 30 minutes  Start of the day: 7:45 a.m.  End of the day: 3:15 p.m.  How will this effect the drop off and pick up for families with students in both the Grammar School and the Upper School?  The Kindergarten – 5 th graders with older siblings will wait in their classrooms with their teachers until their carpool number is called, just like it is now

What do all these changes mean for your 6 th grader? And how can you help?  Time management will be very important  Organization will be a necessity  Your student will get their own log in to Student Portal  Wonderful way for them to become accountable for their own work  You have the right to use their log in to see: grades, attendance, behavior  Become very familiar with D2L.  Your student will get a log in at the start of the year, be sure you know what it is  Teachers post homework, upcoming tests, long-range assignments, notes, video clips that relate to the units being covered

What types of classes will your child have in 6 th grade?  There are two types of classes: 1. Core academics English/language arts, math, science, and social studies 2. Electives Band, orchestra, chorus (year-long classes) Art, PE, technology, Latin, reading and math support (semester-long classes)

How will they choose their classes?  Core academics – Teachers will make recommendations  Electives – Students and parents will be making these choices How does it work to choose electives? You and your child will get information on what the electives are and you can make those selections together Student will return the course selection to school Exploration for chorus, band, and orchestra after-school

Exploration for Performing Arts  Explorations for chorus, band, and orchestra will be after school  Tuesday, April 14, 3:30 – 5:00 – Band only  Wednesday, April 15, 3:30 – 5:00 – Band and Orchestra  Thursday, April 16, 3:30 – 5:00 – Band, Orchestra, and Chorus
