What is a Work Place Mentor? The success of the Work-Based Learning Student Intern/Apprentice is often based on the instruction the student receives from both the teacher coordinator and the work-based learning mentor. Generally speaking, a WBL Mentor should be a supportive adult who provides guidance and encouragement to the student mentee. Mentors should have an interest in working with young people. Mentors should assist in teaching work tasks and job responsibilities to the student mentee. Career Related Education Manual 2012

Qualities of A mentor A good mentor knows and performs their job well and should be willing to share their knowledge. Mentors should be of character and should posses qualities a student will want to emulate. Mentors should have a broad understanding of the industry and not just a particular job. Mentors should have the technical competencies needed to teach a student mentee. Career Related Education Manual 2012

Suggested criteria for mentor selection Prerequisites: 1-2 years experience in field 12 months continuous service with the organization Full-time status preferred Willing to serve as a mentor Career Related Education Manual 2012

Mentor Role 1) Provide induction of the Work-based Learning Student into the business- Orient the student mentee to the job, business and industry as a whole. 2) Training the Work-based Learning Student participates in developing a training plan for the student mentee 3) Evaluation of the Work-Based Learning Student Evaluates the students progress in learning their job and communicates with the WBL teacher/coordinator. 4) Counseling the Work-Based Learning Student on matter s related to work and school. Counsels student concerning their performance on the job and relationship with other employees. Career Related Education Manual 2012
