Framework for Teaching Developed by Charlotte Danielson Was developed as a result of research she was doing related to the PRAXIS exam Identifies four main areas of teaching responsibility that are important to student achievement Is the basis of the evaluation system required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education

What are your thoughts? On your paper, take a few minutes and list what you think are the qualities of teaching most tightly tied to student learning? Do this BY YOURSELF and try to get as inclusive a list as you can in the allotted time

The Framework for Teaching Comprised of four Domains: Domain 1 – Planning and Preparation Domain 2 – The Classroom Environment Domain 3 – Instruction Domain 4 – Professional Responsibilities

The Framework for Teaching: Components of Professional Practice 9 Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities Reflecting on Teaching Maintaining Accurate Records Communicating with Families Participating in a Professional Community Growing and Developing Professionally Showing Professionalism Domain 3: Instruction Communicating with Students Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques Engaging Students in Learning Using Assessment in Instruction Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness Domain 1: Planning and Preparation Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy Demonstrating Knowledge of Students Setting Instructional Outcomes Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources Designing Coherent Instruction Designing Student Assessments Domain 2: The Classroom Environment Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport Establishing a Culture for Learning Managing Classroom Procedures Managing Student Behavior Organizing Physical Space

The Framework for Teaching Let’s have some additional practice with the Domains and components

Features of A Framework for Teaching 11 Generic: applies to all grade levels, content areas Not a checklist –Evidence based/reflective Not prescriptive: tells the “what” of teaching, not “how” Comprehensive: not just what we can see Inclusive: Novice to Master teacher

Adding another layer of understanding about The Framework for Teaching Within the Framework for Teaching, there are 4 Domains, and then there are 22 components within them. In order to make The Framework more useful for teachers and those who evaluate them, even more specificity is needed, along with a way to assess teaching performance Let’s look at the rubric that has been developed to accompany The Framework…

13 Card Sort Read your card Using a Post-It note, identify: Domain Component Element Share at your table as instructed; come to consensus

14 Rewrite Select one scenario at your table Determine tentative Level of Performance Rewrite at higher and lower levels using rubric characteristics
