Next Steps with MAP Goal Setting & Dynamic Reports Jeanelle McGuire & Dinah Wallace Barren County School District Glasgow, KY

Started using MAP in 2003 Currently test students 2 nd - 9 th grade in Reading, Mathematics and Language ~2,938 of our 4,400 students. Test a growing number of students, K-1, with Primary MAP for use with RTI and instruction. Have moved beyond just using scores to implementing what the scores can help us do in instruction. Barren County’s experience with MAP

CLASS BY RIT  Visual representation of diversity in each subject.  Range of Performance: the more RIT bands = the greater academic diversity in the group.  Provides a instant visual of the students on the outer ends of the scale.  Create flexible groups for specific skill instruction.  Provides ease of access to DesCartes for specific RIT Band planning/instruction.

Aligned to the student’s current instructional level. Students should have a solid understanding of concepts. Where you want to move the student’s understanding of concepts toward. Whole Group Homework One –on-one/small group - Enrichments DesCartes

Next Steps Setting Goals School Class Student Determine instructional practices to meet goals Implement your plan Retest students Celebrate success or determine what needs to be revised. Resource: NWEA Knowledge AcademyNWEA Knowledge Academy

School Goal Setting A goal is set that each class will have 85% of students who reach or surpass their goal in 2 of the 3 subject areas. School theme for the year: Western – “Round up Good Scores” Corral on the wall in the main hall with, Ellis Dye machine or such, animals (student name on) if student reaches their goal. If school reaches their goal: i.e.: Each class has 85% of students that reach their goal- Principal will have someone come in to give students horse back rides or the school will give $ to help sponsor a wild mustang.

Class Goal Setting Look at Goal Performance Area summary on reports Celebrate area with highest mean Set goal to bring up the lowest mean area Determine how you are going to target this area and put a plan into place.  Set goals with students  Targeted Intervention Highest Mean: Computation Lowest Mean: Measurement 1.¾ of the students in the class will raise their measurement RIT by 6 or more points 2.Set up RIT band time for class or grade instruction.

Student Goal Setting Where do you find student target goals? 1.Dynamic Reports * as shown below 2.Final Reports – ASG_Class Report *MAP CoordinatorASG_Class Report 3.Growth Calculator * Map Coordinator

Student Goal Setting After you set the goal with your class meet with each student individually to discuss how their individual goals will help the class meet their goal. *Some principals have met with the students one-on-one to set goals. Help the student set a reasonable goal: *Knowledge Academy has sample interviews.Knowledge Academy Explain what activities you will be doing to help meet the class goal and allow the student to come up with ways in which they can meet their individual goal. Student Led Conferences: Students meet with parents to discuss their goals. Give parents a copy of DesCartes for the RIT band you are targeting and have them determine things they can do at home. DesCartes

Student Goal Setting Implementing RIT Band time will help students meet their goals Focusing on a goal will help the students to engage in extra activities that will help them meet the goals. Involving parents will give both the student & parent ownership in the growth goals.

Ideas for RIT Band Time  4 teachers – 30 minutes - 3 times a week -6 weeks Divide Computation RIT bands into 4 academic diverse groups. Each teacher works with small groups supplement instruction with activities not from the core math curriculum, activities may include worksheets for drill and practice.  10 teachers – 35 minutes- 2 times a week -6 weeks Looking at the Measurement RIT band student groups are worked with using hands –on material, videos, computer software, but activities do not include worksheets for drill and practice.

NWEA Spark Community Thank you Where can I go to get ideas and share information with other MAP districts?
