B E ABLE TO : Describe 3 different ways you could design columns and explain which design you would choose. Describe how friction plays a role in the stability of a structure? Describe external forces that might act on that structure. Be able to sketch a design to maximize its performance but use materials efficiently. Draw and label an example of a brace, an arch, a cantilever, a beam, and a column.

S HORT ANSWERS What kind of force is in effect when a building starts to lean over? Why is soil tested before construction? What kind of force makes the weight of a building compress the soil and lean to one side? How can buckling be prevented?
