Objective: How did Lincoln’s presidency help save the union? Abraham Lincoln

Interesting Facts He was born on February 12th 1809, and died April 15th 1865 at the age of fifty six. He had deep depression, even though he would frequently tell stories and jokes to friends and family. He was the tallest U.S president at 6ft 4 inches. Lincoln disliked killing and harming animals, even for food 1 st Republican President

The Lincoln-Douglass Debates In 1858, the little known Lincoln ran against Stephen Douglass for his Senate seat. The majority of the debates were about popular sovereignty in the western territories. Popular Sovereignty will cause slavery to eventually pass away on its own! Only legislation will end slavery!

The Lincoln-Douglass Debates Douglass won the Senate Seat But… Lincoln became famous for his attacks on slavery and Republicans began thinking of him as an excellent presidential candidate

HIGHLIGHTS OF LINCOLN’S PRESIDENCY

Election of 1860 What political party was Lincoln a part of when he ran for president? Why did his election cause the South to cede from the Union?

Lincoln’s Goal at the beginning of the War Keep the union together at any cost! “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy slavery” –Lincoln 1862

The Emancipation Proclamation After the battle of Antietam, used the emancipation proclamation as a war strategy It only gave freedom to slaves in the Confederacy…Not slaves in the border states that never left the Union

Impact of the Proclamation Gave the Civil War a new moral purpose: a war to end slavery. It allowed free African-Americans to enlist in the Army It removed the option of compromise between the Union and Confederacy.

The Gettysburg Address Turn to pg. 361 in your book to read the Gettysburg Address. It is really short and only took Lincoln 2 minutes to speak. Discussion Questions: What reasons did Lincoln give in the Address for why the Union was fighting the Civil War? Why do you think historians said this speech “remade America”?

Lincoln Suspends Habeas Corpus Lincoln dealt harshly with dissent in the Union During the Civil War Lincoln suspended the right of Habeas Corpus Habeas Corpus is your right to not be arrested without being charged or given a trial.

Lincoln Suspends Habeas Corpus Over 13,000 suspected Confederate Sympathizers were thrown in jail without trial!

The 13 th Amendment Lincoln believed the only way to permanently end slavery was through a constitutional amendment The 13 th Amendment, which outlawed slavery, was passed after months of debate in Congress.

Lincoln’s Assassination On April 14, 1965 (only 5 days after Lee’s surrender) Lincoln was shot in the back of the head while attending a play with his wife.

Lincoln’s Assassination The assassin, John Wilkes Booth was a supporter of the south. Lincoln died the next day Booth was captured and killed by Union Soldiers 12 days later
