Digital Innovation Closing Thoughts Dan Elron

Class objectives  Help students understand the great impact and likely opportunities from new digital technologies  Introduce some basic frameworks, concepts, tools to help describe, evaluate and apply digital innovation  Provide context and examples about how this type of innovation is playing out in today’s global business environment

The vision: You in a few years “We can avoid being disrupted… let us do the disrupting…”

Key points to remember 1.It is early days in the digital revolution- combinatorial innovation and new technologies such as IoT are just beginning to affect many industries 2.Much value will be created, and destroyed 3.Most large companies struggle to deal with the rate of change- they need fresh thinking! 4.You need a portfolio of ideas with different goals, time horizons and risk profiles 5.This is the best example :

Observations and Questions  Great improvement in engagement, ideas as the class progressed (why did it take a while?)  OK on connecting examples to the frameworks, can do better  Lots to cover in a short course - may need to extend or focus, be more specific on assignments  Pace vs. depth challenge - are we doing too much and at too high a level?

Advice 1.Read (Wired, NYT, WSJ, Economist…) 2.Notice (new apps, ads, technologies) and critique 3.Presentations - practice, practice, and get coaching 4.Your career- try many things but keep in mind that this is a good time to benefit from the tech revolution and value creation and disruption; try to remember which side you are on, and whether you and your company are innovating yourselves enough 5.Keep in touch ( Linkedin)!
