The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for Robotics in Europe SRA was compiled by Coordination Action for Robotics in Europe (CARE), a projected funded under the 6 th Framework ( ) CARE was organized by the European Robotics Technology Platform (EUROP) whose president is the CEO of Kuka – a German robot company Recommendation of application scenarios and technology roadmap for 2010, 2015 and beyond 2020 Mostly from industrial point of view Available at

Application Scenarios

Application Requirements 12 categories to realize the scenarios Some examples in 2015 –Configuration: robot co-worker capable of autonomous semantic learning of new environment during manual operation –Position and mobility: autonomous transport system is able to navigate using geometrical modeling by vision in real-time –Surgery: robotized surgery taught in medical school –Human-robot interaction: industrial robot is programmed by constrained natural language

Technology 18 categories to support the requirements Some examples in 2015 –Learning by demonstration –Human-robot teamwork –Emotion recognition through audio-visual interface –Hardware redundancy through safety circuit –20 KW direct drive motor –No need of pre-programmed grasping –Fish mimicking underwater locomotion –Artificial muscle (electroactive polymers) –Energy harvesting from surroundings

The Project Vector Versatile Endoscopic Capsule for gastrointestinal TumOr Recognition and therapy

Vector Working Programs WP0 Project Management WP1 Medical and Technological Background & System Requirements WP2 Market & Regulatory Framework WP3 Design and Dimensioning of the Robotic Pill / Platform and its Variations WP4 Locomotion & Space Creation WP5 Vision System & Illumination WP6 Integrated Circuit Development WP7 Sensors for Diagnosis WP8 Tissue Sampling & Treatment WP9 Power Supply WP10 Navigation & Localization WP11 Communication & Telemetry Issues WP12 Control System & User Interface WP13 System Integration of the Prototype WP14 Medical Assessment, Pre-Clinical & Clinical Studies WP15 Derivatives & Spin-off Devices WP16 Health-Economic Impact & Outcomes Analysis WP17 Training, Dissemination and Exploitation

Locomotion and Space Creation Performing controlled diagnosis and therapy in selected areas of the gut. Space creation to distend the tissues for proper diagnosis and visualization

Remote Motion Control Led by Professor Paolo Dario in Italy Future therapy by pin-pointing the tumor and delivering medicine in great accuracy

Project Octopus (FP7) High Dexterity Soft-bodied Robots Inspired by the Morphology and Behavior of the Octopus From an engineering point of view, the octopus and its arms present interesting characteristics, such as: –infinite number of degrees of freedom (DOFs), –bending possibilities in many different directions, –variable and controllable stiffness, –high dexterity, –fine manipulation capabilities, –highly distributed control. EAP based artificial muscle

RobotCup RobotCub is a 5 years long project funded by the European Commission through Unit E5 "Cognitive Systems, Interaction & Robotics". Main goal is to study cognition through the implementation of a humanoid robot the size of a 3.5 year old child An open project in many different ways: –Distribute the platform openly –Develop software open-source, –Open to including new partners and form collaboration worldwide.

Suggestions Smart manufacturing initiative in Taiwan has a similar thinking as the EU Robotics program A more aggressive thinking is needed for the scientific part of the Robotics research
