By Sam Kilpatrick Settle – Carlisle

Introduction This railway is probably the most scenic train journey in England. The line opened in 1876 and it has survived two attempts to close it – once in the early 1960s and later in the 1980s. Both attempts caused local and national outrage. In the 72 miles between Settle and Carlisle there are 14 tunnels and over 20 viaducts. There are 9 stations between Settle and Carlisle which are; Horton-in- Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Dent, Garsdale, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby, Langwathby, Lazonby and Armathwaite.

Lake District The Lake District is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its amazing views, lakes, forests and mountains.

Settle Settle is a market town in the foothills of the Pennines amongst some of the most picturesque scenery in North Yorkshire. The town stands beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain - in a region of scars, cliffs, caves and potholes.

Settle A short walk away from the station is The Yorkshire Dales Falconry Centre. The centre was created in 1991, since which time it has offered the public a close up experience of many magnificent birds of prey and allowed them to see them flying free in the lovely Yorkshire Dales.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale There are many places to explore underground here as this area is rich with caves and potholes, Hull Pot, below Pen-y-Ghent and Alum Pot, above Selside are two of the main destinations.

Ribblehead Ribblehead Station is in one of the most beautiful areas on the Settle to Carlisle line, surrounded by the Three Peaks of the Yorkshire Dales – Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. Ribblehead Viaduct – 24 arches crossing Batty Moss 100 feet below and 440 yards long, follows the station.

Dent Dent is the highest mainline station in England. Snow fences made from old railway sleepers can be seen on the right when travelling towards Carlisle. At the peak of its use 90 trains a day passed through the station.

Garsdale Garsdale is arguably the most spectacularly situated station on the Settle-Carlisle. Another feature of Garsdale were the highest water troughs in the world which express trains used to gather water whilst passing through Garsdale at speed. Garsdale also has the only working signal box on the line.

Kirkby Stephen Four miles south of Kirkby Stephen station you can see the picturesque Norman ruins of Pendragon Castle. Named after Uther Pendragon the castle is supposed to be birthplace of his son, King Arthur.

Appleby The station is set fairly high above the town, with a well marked walk down to the town centre and the River Eden. The platforms are the longest on the line at 200 yards, built originally for the purposes of the Anglo-Scottish expresses.

Carlisle In Carlisle there is much to do and see for people of all ages. Carlisle is a city steeped in history, places to visit include Carlisle Castle, which sits proudly overlooking the city and the Carlisle Citadel which was erected in 1541 by King Henry VIII to strengthen the cities defences.

Carlisle Carlisle is also the gateway city to the Western stretch of Hadrian's Wall.

Carlisle Brunton Park is the home to Carlisle Football Club who are currently playing their trade in the 3 rd division of English football, Sky bet League 1.
