Chemical Bonding. Covalent Bonds Formed when 2 atoms share electrons Occurs most often between nonmetals.
 shared bonding electrons pairs are pulled (as in a “tug-of-war”) between atoms  results in an equal or unequal sharing.

SECTION 2-1 CONT. Bonding

TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS  Bonds involve the electrons in an atom.  1. Ionic Bonds Electrons are transferred from one atom to another Formed from ions with a similar opposite charge Ex: Mg 2+ and O 2-

TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS  2. Covalent Bonds Electrons are shared between the atoms Not always shared equally

TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS  3. Van der Waals Forces (Intermolecular) Unequal sharing of electrons can create regions of a molecule that are charged. These charged areas are attracted to regions on a nearby molecule with an opposite charge.
