ELA organisation EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS Malawi, South-eastern Africa
In 2011 ELA’s project of building a cultural & cducational centre with program for children with special needs in primary schools has started.
Most African countries have already introduced general primary, free-of-charge Most African countries have already introduced general primary, free-of-charge education for the children, but: classrooms are overcrowded, pupil to teacher ratio in rural schools is roughly 100 children to 1teacher teachers cannot work with pupils individually which is especially tough on children with special needs who do not follow the lectures and do not meet the required standards of knowledge.
Although primary education is available, a great portion of pupils do not benefit from it, as the education they get is weak. That fact diminishes their chances to enter good secondary school and later find a descent job. Therefore their and their family’s future is destined to poverty.
For 2 years ELA has been feeding 342 pupils from PS Mazembe. Before everyday breakfast was provided, children were not participating in school activities because of hunger. After feeding sitaution has changed.
ELA’s programs in Malawi are : EVERYDAY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS (+everyday feeding) EVERYDAY GENERAL WORKSHOPS FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN (mathematics, English, reading, writing, art, sport workshops) EMYEC- ELA MAZEMBE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT CLUB for 100 youths. (Drama/theater club, singing, dancing group, football and volleyball team) WEC - WOMEN ELA'S CLUB FOR 50 women (basic literacy courses, financial literacy course and assistance with establishing small scale businesses)
When we opened ELA's educational centre in June 2013, we have been daily running 2 educational programs to assist children with learning disabilities. Program was created by Slovenian special needs teachers and adapted to Malawian curriculum.
In ELA's centre we have been daily running general educational workshops for about 200 pupils all ages. We have been teaching them mathematics, English, reading, writing, art, sport.
