Let’s Start With a Number Routine! With the group demo number routine

Let’s Start With a Number Routine! With the group demo number routine

What is a Number Routine? Short (five to fifteen-minute) intentional mini-lessons An opportunity for teachers to revisit and extend students’ number sense and basic computation Repeated experiences for students to communicate about numbers Share slide and elaborate if needed

When Should I Teach With Routines? Traditionally routines are presented everyday at the beginning of the math class Many Common Core Standards develop over time and incorporating them into routines will assist with mastery. Share slide, elaborate if needed

How Do I Decide on a Routine? Let your students drive the routines you focus on Observing students during a lesson can give valuable information and provide information about which skills need to be revisited. Whatever routines you choose, your students will gain the most from these routines if they work with them regularly. Stay consistent alternating between a few routines over time until students demonstrate mastery. Share slide, elaborate if needed

Where Can I Find Examples of Routines? Grade Level Mathematics Common Core Wiki Explain that in each grade level wiki there is a section marked routines It can be found on the left hand side under Supporting Mathematics

Where Can I Find Examples of Routines? Many different routines. Many appropriate across grade levels. Take to 1st grade wiki, show ……. AFTER THIS SLIDE KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS MAY LEAVE AND VIEW THE PODCAST FROM THE EARLY ED. OFFICE

Mathematical Instructional Levels with the Common Core Standards Beginning of the Year Instructional Level Placement Recommendations Groupings Should be determined guided by this document Should be made within the first few weeks of school On grade level classes should include mixed abilities

Instructional Level Placement Recommendations Where Can I Find Them?

Instructional Level Placement Recommendations Where Can I Find Them?

Now that I have my students tested and grouped, what should my 75 minute math block look like?

What are essential components of a math block? How do these activities connect to the Common Core? Which of these items are most important? Some activities to consider. . . Calendar Math, Routines, Whole group instruction, Differentiated small group activities, Whole group closure, Exit Ticket/ Formative assessment

What Should My Math Block Look Like? Planning This planning sheet can be found on the wiki under – Planning For Mathematics. Point out the components highlighted on the planning sheet. Ask participants if these are similar to what they determined at important in the math block.

How will I assess my students on a regular basis?

Formative Assessments are used to inform instruction and provide feedback to students on their learning. There are a variety of types of formative assessments They can be done before, during, and after instruction. They can be given with a small group, individually, or as students work independently

Extended response tasks Observations Interviews Conversations Extended response tasks Journals and reflections Open-Ended Questions Exit tickets Reports and projects Portfolios Selected Response Items

Formative Assessments Where Can I Find Them? Go over the sample FA. Ask the following questions 1.What is being assessed? 2. How and when would you use it? 3. What tool could you use to collect data? Remind participants that many FA can be found on the Wiki as well as data collection tools.

Formative Assessments Where Can I Find Them?
