John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was a major scholar of the English language, specialising in Old and Middle English. Twice Professor of Old English at the University of Oxford, he also wrote a number of stories, including most famously The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), which are set in a pre-historic era in an invented version of the world which he called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth. This was peopled by Men (and women), Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, Orcs (or Goblins) and of course Hobbits. He has regularly been condemned by the Eng. Lit. establishment, with honourable exceptions, but loved by literally millions of readers worldwide. In the 1960s he was taken up by many members of the nascent "counter-culture" largely because of his concern with environmental issues. In 1997 he became top of three British polls, organised respectively by Channel 4 / Waterstone's, the Folio Society, and SFX, the UK's leading science fiction media magazine, amongst discerning readers asked to vote for the greatest book of the 20th century. http://www.tolkiensociety.org/tolkien/biography.html

Speculative fiction Fantasy Adventure novel Juvenile fantasy Fiction Children's literature

The Hobbit’s setting is in Middle-Earth, Bag-End, the Lone-Lands, Rivendell, The Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, Laketown, and The Lonely Mountains. In the book they travel through all of these places…

1.) Bilbo Baggins A very calm hobbit that is well respected by his village and has a great role play in the series 2.) Gandalf Gandalf is a kind wizard who joins Thorin, Bilbo, and the other dwarves in there adventure. 3.) Thorin Thorin is the king of the dwarves and is on the adventure to retrieve all of his kingdom’s gold, diamonds, etc. 4.) all of the other dwarves I can’t list them all [treat them as side characters]

The Hobbit is a book where Gandalf (the wizard) asks Bilbo Baggins (the main character) to go on an adventure. In this adventure they face many challenges such as giant trools, flaming trees, evil wolves, underground goblins, and the main goal to kill a mighty dragon (Smaug) which has been protecting a great treasure that belongs to the dwarves. Bilbo joins Gandalf, Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Ori, and Thorin Oakenshield on an adventure to take back the treasures that once belonged to the dwarves. They travel through the misty mountains then through a forest infested with spiders, and after they battle the mighty dragon Smaug. Smaug ends up being killed by Bark the king of Dale, and that results in a war between five nations; dwarves, the people of dale, the goblins, the elves, and the people of dain. It was a dreadful battle which ended up with Thorin DEAD!

The action starts when Gandalf appears at Bilbo’s House and asks Bilbo to an adventure. He joins many dwarves including Thorin and Gandalf on an adventure to go to the Mountain where they can slay the mighty dragon, Smaug. They start their journey and before the day ends they have escaped trolls. They go through the Misty Mountains and battle orcs, evil wolves, and eagles that were on their side. Then they go through the forest, Mirkwood, and survive endless darkness and evil spiders. After that they get to battle the mighty dragon.

The climax is when Smaug is killed by the king of Dale The climax is when Smaug is killed by the king of Dale. A big battle happens between 5 kingdoms for all of the dwarves’ treasure. It ends with Thorin dead.

The falling action is when they split up the treasure and Bilbo goes home. He gives many of his treasure away, but keeps some of it for himself and Frodo Baggins (his nephew)

The resolution is when Bilbo gets back and gives out most of his treasure, and settles down. (he is now less respected in his neighborhood but does not mind).

I love this book personally… it has many thrills and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It leads up to the exciting The Lord of the Rings which I saw. My dad wanted me to read this book… I would not have ever read this book, had it been for my dad.

I hope you enjoyed the report  The Hobbit coming spring 2013
