Laser Acupuncture (LA) in Obesity Therapy LA vs needle acupuncture Successful LA 2015/11/15LA for Obesity4

Background (1) Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and some cancers. (WHO, 2006) Most drugs that have achieved regulatory approval and reached the markets have subsequently been withdrawn owing to postmarketing discovery of serious adverse effects. (Astrup, 2010) 2015/11/155LA for Obesity

Background (2) Unrealistic expectations regarding weight loss frequently result in a failure to manage weight. (Hainer et al., 2008) LA and low-calorie diet can treat visceral postmenopausal obesity. (Wozniak et al., 2003) LA has been found to exert a therapeutic effect on simple obesity by reducing both body weight and body mass index with a non- restrictive diet protocol. (Hu et al., 2010) 2015/11/156LA for Obesity

2015/11/157LA for Obesity

Laser acupuncture for simple obesity Our participants underwent laser acupuncture and followed a non-restrictive diet protocol. (Hu et al., 2010) Simple obesity: BMI ≥ 30 kg/m² (27 kg/m² in Taiwan) resulting from primary causes. (NIH, 1998) 2015/11/158LA for Obesity

Patients 73 women and 22 men Age: 14 – 76 years (36.78 ± 13.24) Height: 145 – 180 cm ( ± 7.48) BW: 62 – kg (84.79 ± 14.08) BMI: 27.1 – 51.6 kg/m² (32.10 ± 4.30) 2015/11/159LA for Obesity

Daily energy intake Women: (height in cm [160.0 ± 6.0] – 70) × 0.6 × 30 kcal ( ± 180.0) Men: (height in cm [170.2 ± 6.6] – 80) × 0.7 × 30 kcal ( ± 198.0) Between what an active person (28.66 kcal/kg/day) and a moderately active person (33.07 kcal/kg/day) would require maintaining their body weight. (Eckel, 2005) 2015/11/1510LA for Obesity

Energy and duration Deliver J of energy (5 s) to the following points: Stomach and Hunger (auricular points), ST25 (Tianshu), ST28 (Shuidao), ST40 (Fenglong), SP15 (Daheng), and CV9 (Shuifen). Each subject was treated three times per week for four weeks. 2015/11/1513LA for Obesity

The reduction in waistline was 1.0 to 3.5 in. Results 2015/11/1522LA for Obesity

Discussion (1) Unrealistic expectations regarding weight loss frequently result in a failure to manage weight. (Hainer et al., 2008) Our subjects should not have suffered from hunger. 2015/11/1523LA for Obesity

Discussion (2) Stomach and Hunger fortify the spleen and clear the stomach to induce appetite suppression. ST25 and SP15 regulate qi movement to enable bowels to perform their activities. ST28 and CV9 regulate waterways and induce diuresis to alleviate edema. ST40 fortifies the spleen and harmonize the stomach to reduce dampness and resolve phlegm. (WPRO, 2007; Weng and Jiao, 2000 ) 2015/11/1524LA for Obesity

Discussion (3) Acupuncture suppresses overeating, inhibits increased gastrointestinal digestion and absorption, reducing calorie uptake, enhance energy metabolism, and promote mobilization and utilization of fat. (Liu et al., 1995) Laser acupuncture integrates the positive effects of acupuncture and low-level lasers. 2015/11/1525LA for Obesity

Discussion (4) LA has the advantages of noninvasive, aseptic, painless, safe, effective and requires less time than needle-based acupuncture in obesity therapy. (Stellon, 2005; Whittaker, 2004; Küblböck, 2001) No side effects or complications resulting from laser acupuncture were observed in our subjects. 2015/11/1526LA for Obesity

60LA for Obesity28 Advantages of LA (1) 1. Shorter therapy duration (10 ~ 20 seconds /point). 2. Points which are difficult to treat with a needle (mucous membranes, wounds, joints, etc.) can be included in the treatment. 3. Painless therapy (for the sensitive patients, children, etc…)

60LA for Obesity29 4. Used in those cases for which classical acupuncture does not recommended the use of needles (asthenia). 5. Aseptic (sterilization not necessary). 6. Can be used to complement and extend the needle program if additional points are required to optimize energy flow. Advantages of LA (2)

Conclusions In the hands of an experienced physician, laser acupuncture can be useful in controlling simple obesity. Laser acupuncture produces a therapeutic effect on simple obesity by reducing both BW and BMI. Subjects demonstrate good compliance with this comfortable and non-restrictive diet protocol. 2015/11/1532LA for Obesity
