Presentation transcript:

 Please enter the classroom, take out a spiral notebook. You will need some kind of a notebook for both notes and Daily Writing assignments. Answer the following questions:  What makes a human HUMAN?  What is the difference between a human and other animals?  How would this question have been answered by people who lived years ago?

 What effect does a person’s attitude have on their behavior?  What effect does a person’s attitude have on their mental and emotional health?  After reading the article on Optimism and Pessimism write a brief response:  How does the message of this article apply to you as a student?

 Please respond to this cartoon in your journal  What is it saying  What is your reaction to it?

 Describe the lasting contributions to modern psychology of Phrenology and Mesmerism.

 Do you believe people have intuition?  What is intuition? Give an example.  Read and respond the the cartoon below.  What is it saying about intuition?  Do you agree or disagree?

 Right now in your life, which questions seem to be the most interesting to you? Choose one or more questions. Explain what you would like to know. 1. Why are some people happier than others? 2. How do our brains work? 3. How can we help people who are suffering? 4. What influence do parents have over who their children become? 5. How can we combat racism and conflicts?

 Please write down 2-3 questions about the brain and how it works.

 Where in the brain is the frontal lobe?  Describe the function of the frontal lobe? That is, what does it do?

 Without using your notes try to answer the following questions based on yesterday’s lesson. This quiz is formative, that is, it should tell you how well you are learning. It will not be scored for assessing you yet. It is practice.  Describe the location of the Parietal, Temporal and Occipital lobes (three points)  What does each of these lobes do? (three points)

 Score yourself one point for each correct answer for a total of 6 points. On your notecard tell me how many points you scored.  Parietal Lobe: Located in the middle and the top of the head. Contains the sensory strip and is responsible for physical sensation.  Temporal Lobe: Located on the side of the head, near the ears. Responsible for some memory and speech and hearing functions.  Occipital Lobe: Located at the back of then head. Responsible for processing visual stimuli (seeing).

 Describe the function of the:  Cerebral cortex  Limbic system  Amygdala

 Cerebral Cortex:  The Upper Brain, responsible for cognitive processes (thinking)  Limbic System:  The “reptile brain,” responsible for body function  Amygdala  Responsible for social/sexual behavior, adding emotions to memories.

 You will have 5 minutes to finish yesterday’s brain drawing assignment. Please take it out and start working on it.

 Describe the function of the following brain parts:  Thalamus  Hypothalamus  Hippocampus  Medula  Cerebellum  Pons  Reticular Activating System

 Thalamus: the brain’s relay station  Hypothalamus: basic body needs and some emotions like anger.  Hippocampus: learning and long-term memory  Medula: Brain stem – controls basic body function like breathing and heart rate  Cerebellum: controls balance and motor function  Pons: the bridge, regulates sleep.  Reticular Activating System: alertness control center, controls body’s activity level.

 Please take out your notes and begin to review for tomorrow’s quiz. Tomorrow you will have an actual quiz on brain parts and their functions.
