Hector Sanchez16 August CERN Background introduction Webcast service WLAP: Web Lecture Archive Project Pilot project started by IT division Delivering of video through the Internet (webcast): CERN events Implement an e-archival system for slide based lectures on the Internet CDS Video (RealMedia) Slides(Graphic) Timing (Text file) Syncomatic
Hector Sanchez Main objectives 16 August CERN Archiving Long term, metadata and a systematic procedure to store it Avoids time, place, availability constraints Digital archive delivered through the Internet Production of Web Lectures Keep delivering WL for future events

Hector Sanchez Improvements: Key points 16 August CERN Archiving for long term Scenario analysis deduced problems No systematic method, non scaleable data formats, no metadata Dependency on one person People working in non-specialised tasks loose of quality Process is VERY heavy and manual Tasks repeated Re-organise the process

Hector Sanchez Improvements: Results (I) 16 August CERN Archiving for long term A systematic archiving procedure has been set up Metadata is kept in the Agenda Maker DB library DB Certain long term availability is guaranteed we keep RAW data Benefits from the re-organised process Process is more distributed autonomy Process is more specialised better quality Many tasks have been reviewed and automated simpler Process is more transparent to actors less errors Faster availability Raw material: 1 min; Web Lecture:1/2 hour
Hector Sanchez Improvements: Results (II) 16 August CERN New services offered Tested process: SSL % of the lectures have been correctly archived and synchronised Only video, printable slides, downloadable version, search,… Estimated reduction to 30% New website for webcast.cern.ch
Hector Sanchez Problems & future development 16 August CERN Process is (sometimes) still too heavy When not PPT timing has to be taken manually Autotiming?? Long term archiving Keeping raw data allow us to adapt to technological changes The master format has to be “convertible” RealMedia?? Syncomat output is not scalable New efforts in having a description format independent: SMIL, LO CERN service?? Dedicated & Permanent support The set up could be reduced Permanent PC in the MA??
