Our Schedule ▪ 8:45 Students are arrive in classrooms ▪ Students copy assignments in planners and begin morning work (Spelling ) Rise and Shine in classroom ▪ 9:05-9:50 Specials ▪ 9:55-11:50 2 Core Subjects ▪ 11:55-12:40 Lunch and Recess ▪ 12:45-3:15 2 Core Subjects ▪ 3:15 Car riders dismissed ▪ 3:25 Bus riders dismissed

Expectations ▪ 1. Be prompt….be ready when class begins ▪ 2. Be prepared for class…..have materials ▪ 3. Be polite and a positive participant ▪ 4. Be productive…always do your best, turn work in on time ▪ 5. Reading ▪ Novel studies – Focus on specific skills, Vocab quizzes, comprehension quizzes, and a Test at the end of each novel. *We will be reading/discussing novels together, whole group. ▪ Book Clubs Students read a novel with 4 or 5 other students. (Reader’s response journals) ▪ Basal reader – Selected stories, Vocab., Quizzes ▪ Reading Comp. Skills- weekly lessons and activities  Main Idea/Supporting Details *Sequencing  Cause/Effect *Using Resource Materials  Context Clues*Story Elements*Summarizing * Nightly Reading Log- 20 minutes of reading each school night

Independent Reading O Each fifth grade student will be responsible for reading a minimum of 16 novels independently throughout this school year. A novel is considered to be at least pages in length, and on that child’s reading level. O Each student is required to read a minimum of 4 novels each quarter. These 4 novels WILL BE counted as a reading grade in the gradebook. Each independent novel is worth 50 points for a total of 200 points in each quarter.

Independent Reading ★ Students’ novels should come home each night for nightly reading. ★ Students should read a minimum of 20 min. each school night, for a total of 100 min. of reading each week. ★ Please sign your child’s nightly reading log ONLY after they have read to you, or you have witnessed them reading for at least 20 minutes. ○Nightly readings are worth 2 pts. each day, for a total of 10 points per week.

Independent Reading … WAYS TO “REPORT” ABOUT A BOOK Students will be completing a variety of activities to describe the books read on their own. Examples: O Fill out a “Here’s the Scoop” paper (front and back). O Present a Book Talk. Fill out a pre-write paper and final copy then present your book to the class. O Create one of the following: 1. Diorama 2. Poster (summary on back) 3. New book cover (summary on back) 4.Paper Bag book report

Gold and Silver Superstars ★ SILVER Superstars: Students who read 4- 6 novels (on their reading level) in a quarter, and have at least an 85% average on their “reports” for those books. ★ GOLD Superstars: Students who read 7-9 novels (on their reading level) in a quarter, and have at least an 85% average on their “reports” for those books. ★ There will be a SUPERSTAR celebration at the end of each quarter for all who reach Silver and Gold status. Gold Superstars will also get a NO HOMEWORK pass to be used to take the place of 1 nightly reading assignment..
