The Holy Spirit of Promise Third “Head” of the Godhood: God, the Father- Head of All Things, Planner Jesus, the Son- Head of the Church, Executor Holy Spirit, the Spirit- Head of Inspiration, Revealer, 1Cor.2:6-16

The Promise of the Spirit to the Apostles Acts 1:1-12 -It had been promised, v.4 Luke 24:49 > John 14:26; 15:26: 16:7-15 -It was to be a “baptism”, v.5 Acts 2:1- 4 -It was for the Apostles, vv.6-8 cf. Acts 1:2,3,4,5,6,7,8 these, them, you, and they all refer to the antecedent “apostles” in v.2. -It enabled them to perform miracles for the purposes revelation and confirmation, Acts 2:6-21 and Mark 16:14-20.

The Promise of the Spirit to the Believers Acts 2:32-39 -It too been promised, John 7:37-39 John 17:1-5 > Acts 1:4-5,8-10 > 2:1-4 -It was to be associated with “baptism”, v.38 Acts 2:1- 4 But was this the same as the Apostles received? No, because: -they didn’t start performing miracles after their “baptism” cf.vv.42-46 -they weren’t promised to be baptized with the Holy Spirit (cf. 1:8), they were promised the gift of the Spirit after their baptism, 2:38. see also v.39 > Gal.3:7-8, 13-16, 26-29

So, What is the Promise of the Spirit to the Believers? Salvation! Acts 13:26,32 -It is the blessing through Abraham’s Seed which was promised all the way back in Gen.12:3. -What has this to do with the gift of the Spirit in Acts 2:38? -How do we know about promises made to Abraham? -The revelation of the Holy Spirit! Eph.3:3-7 Witness, Acts 5:32 But how does the Holy Spirit “witness” for us? -Rom.8:9-11 by “indwelling”. How doe He do that? -Rom.8:2 by revealing to us the “law of the Spirit” cf.3-8, that when obeyed produces salvation!

The Holy Spirit of Promise: Enabled, by baptismal measure direct from heaven, the Apostles to perform miracles which both revealed God’s word and confirmed them as His messengers. You and I don’t need those abilities today. In fact they have been done away with as 1Cor.13:8-10 said they would be. (cf. Acts 8:18). For us, the gift of the Spirit is salvation by obedience to His revealed Word, and a Witness that we are indeed walking in the light when we live according to that Word.
