Assessment for Learning

What are we assessing? Math SOL 2.6 requires that 2 nd grade students be able to recall basic addition facts (sums to 18 or less) and the corresponding subtraction facts

How do we assess this learning? Pictures/ drawings Listing Story problems Fact families Flash cards Speed drills TouchMath Graphing progress

Pictures/ Drawings Students can create pictures to show an understanding of addition/subtraction facts. These pictures can be done with pencil and paper or with computer software programs such as Kidspiration and KidPix.

Listing Students can make a list of the ways they know how to show a number. Play “Show Me the Number Game” – give students the magic number and have them write all the ways they can make the number by adding or subtracting…fun way to work on speed if you do this with a timer.

Story Problems Students can write and illustrate story problems for addition and subtraction. Turn their work into a class book that can be read by all throughout the year.

Fact Families Students can show how addition and subtraction are related by showing fact families. Use the laptops or SmartBoard:

Flashcards Students need to work on memorizing facts with flashcards. Provide parents with take-home flashcards to encourage daily practice of this skill. Free printable online flashcards/ quizzes: in/flashcards.html sts.html

Speed Drills Students complete “Mad Minutes” of mixed addition/subtraction problems. This helps students work on quick recall of facts.

What is TouchMath? A multisensory teaching approach that bridges manipulation and memorization. TouchMath uses all senses while learning numbers on paper by seeing, saying, touching, and hearing numbers as students get the right answers.

TouchMath This strategy can be used to help students that cannot memorize facts. 1.Teach students the touch points. 2.Teach students to “count on” for addition. 3.Teach students to “count down” for subtraction.

Graphing Students can graph their progress to see if they are improving their recall speed and accuracy This is a great way for students to monitor their learning.

Why do we assess? Assessing our students helps us become better teachers. We know the needs of our students and adjust our teachings to meet those needs. The students can also self- monitor their progress. We can use the information to provide remediation and differentiation to our students.

Looking for new ideas… We are always looking for new ways to teach this skill. We have found some new materials that we are planning to use in the future.
