Volleyball Terminology Review Quiz Abby Beesley

What is an emergency pass, usually used to defend a hard-driven attack? a)DigDig b)SpikeSpike c)DriveDrive d)LobLob

This technique can be used when a spike or hard serve is coming at you.

Who is a player who specializes in backcourt skills and has unlimited back-row entries into the game? a)SpikerSpiker b)Back row playerBack row player c)LiberoLibero d)SubSub

The volleyball libero is a defensive specialist position in indoor volleyball. The position was added to the game in 1999 along with special rules for play in order to foster more digs and rallies and to make the game more exciting. The libero remains in the game at all times and is the only player not limited by rules of rotation. He usually replaces the middle blocker position when they rotate to the back row and never rotates to the front row himself.

Who is the player assigned to attack the ball? a)DriverDriver b)ServerServer c)SetterSetter d)SpikerSpiker

The title given to the player who finishes the attack by hitting the ball across the net fast and hard.ballnet

What is the placement of the ball near the net to facilitate attacking? a)Ball handlingBall handling b)Free ballFree ball c)LobLob d)SetSet

When setting a volleyball, the ball should only be contacted by your fingers and never the palms of your hands. The points of contact on your fingers should be close to the same contact points as when you formed the triangle (basically, you want your finger tips on the ball). The ball should contact your thumbs and first two fingers with an equal amount of force, while your last two fingers on both hands contact the ball with much less force.

What is a pass made off the forearms that is used to play served balls, hard-driven spikes, or any low ball? A)Overhand passOverhand pass B)Forearm passForearm pass C)Held ballHeld ball D)Overlap passOverlap pass

Forearm passing is a basic skill in volleyball that is called a "pass" when you receive a serve and a "dig" when you deal with an opponent's spike or another attack. Use this technique when the ball is below your head, otherwise you should use an overhead set.

Great job! Learning the definitions and basic techniques will help your volleyball performance in the long run!
