Solving Word Problem Equations

How do we do it? Jerry’s Bikes rents bikes for $10 plus $4per hour. Janice paid $30 to rent a bike. For how many hours did she rent the bike? WTL, CT First we need to “pull” the numbers out of the word problem. $10, one time. Plus $4 each hour (How many Hours?) In the end Janice paid $30 4x + 10 = $30

Let’s Try another Jayah bought a soft drink for three dollars and seven candy bars. She spent a total of thirty - eight dollars. How much did each candy bar cost ? Jayah paid $3 once, then 7 candy bars (how much for each one?) All together she spent $ x = $38

Last One Together

On Your Own Fred bought eight new baseball trading cards to add to his collection. The next day his dog ate half of his collection. There are now only thirty - five cards left. How many cards did Fred start with ?

WTL What is the most confusing part of solving these word problems?

On Your Own On Monday, three hundred forty - three students went on a trip to the zoo. All seven buses were filled and seven students had to travel in cars. How many students were in each bus ?

On Your Own Joan had one hundred eighty - five dollars to spend on nine books. After buying them she had fourteen dollars. How much did each book cost ?
