RPC Upscope : An overview with Indian perspective L. M. Pant Nuclear Physics Division Bhabha Atomic Research Centre L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

The first level trigger based on the RPCs provides CMS with the most precise timing in both the barrel and endcap region Six concentric layers of chambers are used in the barrel part, while four layers have been foreseen in total for the end caps to cover a rapidity up to =2.1 L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

666 cm Present end-cap RPC coverage upto  3 layers RPCs are segmented in strips of   x   ~ 0.1 x (5/16) o which makes possible a p T measurement of ~ 50 GeV High  region FRPC upgrade 2011(?) pseudorapidity,  = - ln tan(  /2)  Is the polar angle of the particle wrt the beam axis Longitudinal section of CMS Trigger detector RPC’s : both Barrel & End-Cap:  = 0 to 2.1 Tracking detector Barrel: Drift Tubes :  = 0 to 1.2 End-cap: Cathode Strip Chambers :  = 0.9 to 2.1 CMS barrel end-cap L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

due to insufficient funding availability, only three layers were built in the endcap which provided a limited rapidity coverage up to =1.6 barrel section in 5 wheels =0 =1.2 =1.6 end-cap China Pakistan L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

chambers could be constructed later on so that coverage of the full rapidity range of the original design could be achieved The key element of this proposal is to construct the 4th layer of RPCs in the endcap L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

the 4th layer is in between  = 1.2 and 1.6 simulated trigger efficiency plot : Piet Verwilligen  = 1.24  = 1.42 small dips are due to an interface between different rolls in one chamber L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

barrel section in 5 wheels =0 =1.2 =1.6 end-cap China Pakistan India & Belgium The key element of this proposal is to construct the 4th layer of RPCs in the endcap L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

CMS has decided to split the up-scope project into two distinct phases : Phase 1 : completion of the low  part ( < 1.6) Phase 2 : (earlier called as upgrade) completion of the high  part (1.6 <  < 2.1) L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

Expected financial contribution for low  upgrade 18% India L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

~1000 kCHF per sector ( end caps) ~ 800 kCHF per sector ( end caps) Cost per sector for low  (RE2/2, RE2/3)  ~ 1.2  ~ 1.6 L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

RPCs to be built for low  upgrade extra = 200 Belgium India = 200 RPCs L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

July’10 We are here The road map Oct ’10 Start up for production of gas-gaps, mechanics, electronics Dec ’10 Assembly sites to be ready Dec ’11 Testing, Comissioning & Complete Installation Aug ’10 HPL production Gas-Gaps : production of 600 gas-gaps for 200 chambers would take about 12 months HPL : 2 months are required for the production of 600 foils x (1620 x 3200 mm 2 ) = 3110 m 2 L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

Summary Ten RPCs sent to CERN are certified “Cosmic test OK” RPC lab., at NPD-BARC is fully equipped to undertake the assembly and testing following the QA/QCs as set by CMS-RPC group The Panjab University RPC lab is also equipped with a 4-channel gas-mixing unit, DAQ for the Cosmic Ray test, scintillator hodoscopes, mechanical and electrical workshops, L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29 th July 2010

A/C with dehumidifiers for the RPC lab. at NPD-BARC (civil work to start; commissioning by Dec. 2010) Large area scintillator (18 cm x 200 cm) paddles for chamber efficiency, cluster size and strip profile measurements (to be ready by Nov. 2010) VME based DAQ for 96 channels to measure all physical working parameters for the chambers (operational by March 2011) Once the chambers are assembled, a complete test with a cosmic hodoscope will be performed before the transportation to CERN Fabrication of a new cosmic rack (ready by Dec 2010) the present cosmic rack to be used as a storage device The Panjab University RPC lab. is also ready (fully functional by Dec., 2010) Outlook L.
