Role of the Inter-American Observatory Gather, organize, analyze and divulge different forms of information (statistics, legislation, public policies, good practices, documents, projects, events) Coordinate its action with the existing observatories; regional and national information centers. Looking for hard data UNODC CTS The CTS UNODC survey is been adapted to the region’s needs, with the participation of the OAS GS. The OIS/DSP will be the focal point for promoting the use of the surveys in the Americas, encouraging their completion, and then analyzing the results.

Strengthening regional indicators IDB - CISALVA have developed a set of standard standardized citizen security and violence prevention indicators. Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay recently finished a first round of indicators definition, which are being field tested. Several other countries of the Western Hemisphere have shown interest in participating in this initiative.

Next Steps Adopt a Methodology and an Operation’s Manual for the National Observatories. –The strengthening of existing National Observatories. –The establishment of National Observatories where aren’t any –The decentralization of the data collection process –Access to and availability of data sets Support the establishing of a sustainable system of regular National Victimization Surveys in Member Countries Improve capacity building for the countries to carry out these activities
