UN MDG Workshop: The Final Push – Media´s Role Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger 28 May, 2012 Bangkok, Thailand 1

Content Where are we? Where do we need to be? What are the challenges? What can we do/media do? 2

Where are we? Where do we need to be? Reduced the proportion of people living on less than $1.25 per day from 50 to 22 per cent Reduced the proportion of under-5 children underweight from 35 to 24 per cent, but it is still slow 3

Where are we? Where do we need to be? 4 Source: Staff calculations based on the United Nations MDG database. Progress in reducing the proportion of under-5 children underweight Reducing child malnutrition: – 14 countries likely to miss target (slow, no progress or regressing) – Off-track countries will meet target if progress accelerated by less than 2 percentage points per year

Where are we? Where do we need to be? Large disparities at the country level 5 Source: Staff calculations based on data from DHS Under-5 children underweight

Because of the region’s large population it is also home to a high proportion of the developing world’s deprived people Address the social determinants – Empowerment of women Provide social protection Create jobs Raise agricultural production Implement feeding programs What are the challenges? 6

What can we do/media do? Role of media, as a key development actor Create channels to keep all stakeholders meaningfully engaged in the development process Create mechanisms through which the voice of most marginalized are being heard 7
