MERCURY By: Jason 7.1

Hello my name is Jason and I chose the element Mercury. I chose to do mercury because when I looked at a thermometer, I see the red thing can go up and down and that made me amazed. So here is my Mercury presentation. Introduction

Element: Mercury (Hydrargyrum) Symbol: Hg Atomic Number: 80 Melting Point: °C Boiling Point: °C Atomic Weight: Family: Group 12 (IIB) Transition metal Density: grams per cubic centimeter

Discovery of Mercury The oldest sample of mercury found is at and Egyptian tomb at Kurna stored in a small glass container around 15/16 century B.C. Mercury is mentioned and recorded by the Chinese, Hindus, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Mercury than was thought to have gold in it because its shiny but it actually is very different with gold.

Physical traits Mercury is liquid in room temperature and solid in lower than °C. Mercury is shiny. If mercury is heated up, it will expand but if cool down, it will contract. Mercury is one of the heaviest metal.

Usages Mercury is used in: - thermometers -barometers -manometers -liquid electrolyte -dental amalgams (fillings for teeth) -If mixed, can be used to make other things

Effects on Environment One of the incidents of mercury is in Minamata, Japan on the year 1950 where a acetaldehyde plant dumped heavy metals in the local bay. The aquatic organism got affected and acted weirdly. People who live nearby got affected also because since they consume foods such as fishes which part of the aquatic organism. Some people acted with no motor controls and some died because of the mercury which travelled into their brain.
