Chrysalis Presentation for Action on Hate Crime “Tackling it Together” 27 th October 2014 Registered Charity No

Sexual Orientation and Transgender are two DIFFERENT Protected Characteristics Sexual Orientation and Transgender are two DIFFERENT Protected Characteristics Registered Charity No

In 2007 the Equality and Human Rights Commission took Transgender out of the Diversity Strand Sexual Orientation and aligned it with Gender Registered Charity No

The Commission gave the word Transgender the Definition “someone who is intending to, in the process of or has transitioned from one gender to the other” Registered Charity No

This created an extra Diversity Strand Giving 7 strands where there were previously only 6

Registered Charity No For those who refused to accept Transgender as a separate strand Of Equality They were expected to remove it from Sexual Orientation And align it with Gender

The Equalities Act 2010 uses a similar definition to describe the Protected Characteristic Gender Reassignment Registered Charity No

The Equalities Act 2010 uses the definition ‘… the person is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person’s sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex.’ Registered Charity No

The Equalities Act 2010 states ‘A reference to a transsexual person is a reference to a person who has the Protected Characteristic of Gender Reassignment.’ Registered Charity No

Most LGB&T Societies Still include Transgender Even though being transgender has nothing to do with sexuality

Registered Charity No LGB&T Societies are often the first place a Transgender person discloses their feelings about their gender Confusion

Since 2007 it has been necessary for Transgender to be included within Equality and Diversity and for organisations to have a Transgender Policy Registered Charity No

Transsexual A person confirmed as having GD in which there is strong and ongoing cross-gender identification and a desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite gender. There is persistent discomfort with his or her anatomical sex and sense of inappropriateness in the gender role of that sex. (this is a medical diagnosis)

Registered Charity No Transition Is the act of renewing a life from the birth gender to the destination gender. Transitioning Is the period of time it takes an individual to work through the steps needed to transition from one gender to the other.

Being Transgender is a medical condition Registered Charity No

Every baby of every mammal begins potentially female. During the second month of foetal development, hormones released within the foetus determine whether the baby will remain female or become male.

Registered Charity No The process of developing into ‘male’ or ‘female’ is called Sex-differentiation. These differences are programmed before birth, creating a sense of ‘Gender Identity’ Or ‘Core Gender’

The first thing a baby learns to recognise is gender. A baby learns to identify those who are Mummy people from those who are Daddy people A baby fits their perception of self into a gender very early in their development Mum says I am a boy. But I know I am a girl Registered Charity No

We expect that a baby with male genitalia Will identify as a boy and later a man and A baby with female genitalia Will identify as a girl and later a woman. WITH TRANSGENDER PEOPLE THIS IS NOT THE CASE!

It is only relatively recently that there has been significant research into Gender Dysphoria (which is the medical diagnosis)

Registered Charity No Research In Holland in the early 1990’s showed that Transsexualism is a medical condition, not a state of mind. The brains of Male to Female Transsexuals were analysed and found to be more similar to Female Brains Than Male Brains

Registered Charity No This research showed that the hypothalamus Differs significantly in Male and Female brains

Registered Charity No

It is only by dissecting the Hypothalamus That a definite diagnosis could be given for those who are Transsexual. As this would have to be ‘post-mortem’ It is not a brilliant diagnostic tool.

Registered Charity No

Often Gender Variant children know that they ‘do not fit’ into their perceived gender from a very young age.

Registered Charity No Sometimes it is the onset of puberty that is the catalyst that causes the individual to question their core identity.

Registered Charity No At the onset of puberty, young people may become confused with issues around Gender and Sexual Orientation.

Registered Charity No Counselling at Chrysalis Meeting Centres Ensures that no-one embarks On a life journey That is wrong for them

Registered Charity No At least one person each year attending Chrysalis Would have made a big mistake In their Life Journey Had they not had Counselling at Their Chrysalis Group

Registered Charity No Our own statistics show that 90% of Transgender People are Suicide Survivors Or have seriously contemplated suicide All have or do Self Harm

Chrysalis Is a Charity that provides Meeting Centres for people who have a Gender Identity Issue. Registered Charity No

We have Meeting Centres in: The Southampton, Fareham and Basingstoke Areas Registered Charity No

There are also Significant Others Support Groups (SOS) One evening a month In each area

Registered Charity No Chrysalis has 3 Significant Others Support Groups For anyone who is supporting A Transitioning Transsexual ( Protected Characteristic Gender Reassignment)

Registered Charity No At our Meeting Centres Chrysalis Beneficiaries receive One to one counselling Life skills workshops Guidance on Transitioning Issues and Peer Group Support

Registered Charity No Chrysalis Saves Lives Attending Chrysalis Meeting Centres Enables our beneficiaries to have the confidence to transition safely We have many testimonies to prove this

Registered Charity No Chrysalis supports vulnerable transitioning adults Provides NHS Treatment Pathway Information Works with the Police to reduce Hate Crime Provides information for other organisations Increases Transgender awareness through local networking

Registered Charity No Chrysalis supports both Male to Female and Female to Male Transitioning Adults in Hampshire We estimate one in 2,000 births have Gender Dysphoria Our 3 Meeting Centres support approximately 50 people at any one time

Registered Charity No Each Meeting Centre has a LAGLO Who works with the group This ensures that our Beneficiaries Always have the confidence to report Hate Crime

Registered Charity No In 2012 Chrysalis was commissioned by The Police Authority To conduct a survey about Hate Crime Against our Beneficiaries

Registered Charity No The first obstacle was for our Beneficiaries to recognise and be aware of what Hate Crime is

Registered Charity No Hate Crime Is A Criminal Offence

Registered Charity No Our survey showed that ALL Our Beneficiaries had experienced Hate Crime

Registered Charity No Some of our Beneficiaries believed that Only Transsexuals with a Gender Recognition Certificate Were protected

Registered Charity No The wording of The Equalities Act 2010 Ensures that those who are in the process of transitioning are protected against Hate Crime

Registered Charity No Chrysalis works with the Hampshire Constabulary To ensure that our Beneficiaries are confident enough to report any Hate Crime

The LAGLO who has volunteered To be familiar with each group Is a regular visitor and Can be contacted through the group Facilitator Registered Charity No

The support each LAGLO can give is very valuable and we have many testimonies that support this close relationship Registered Charity No

There have been several incidents that the LAGLO has been able to address without resorting to prosecution. This has enabled our beneficiaries to stay in their homes in safety.

Registered Charity No Having a uniformed officer arrive on the doorstep of the perpetrator and tell them that they have committed a criminal offence Is a daunting experience.

Registered Charity No Then the Officer will inform them that they are not being arrested, this time, due to the generous nature of the victim. This is often a better option than prosecution.

Registered Charity No In each case the details of those who committed the Hate Crime are kept on file and any second offence will not be treated so leniently.

Registered Charity No Some Hate Crime is more serious and prosecutions have been made.

Registered Charity No One serious incident resulted in prison sentences for the perpetrators and closure of the recreational venue involved

Registered Charity No Hate Crime is serious and Every effort must be made to record offences in the right category

Registered Charity No Hate Crime Must Not be recorded as Anti-social behaviour or Neighbourhood disputes

Thank you for listening Any Questions? Registered Charity No
