Psychiatry vs. Psychology A medical doctor who specializes in the treatment of psychological problems Can prescribe medication for clients Specialize in the treatment of psychological problems They are not medical doctors and can not prescribe medication Psychologists and Psychiatrists work together on complex patients

Major Fields in Psychology Clinical Psychologist – evaluate and treat people with psychological problems and disorders  Psychiatrists are part of clinical psychology  Depression, schizophrenia, anxiety  Child & adult mental health, learning disabilities, general health etc.  Work in hospitals, prisons and private clinics Counseling Psychology – typically treat people with adjustment issues, not disorders  Marriage counseling, grief counseling etc.  Like clinical psychologists, they use interviews & tests to determine the issue  Help patients adjust and meet their challenges  Work in businesses & colleges

Major Fields in Psychology School Psychology- identify and help students who have problems that interfere with learning.  Family issues, peer problems, and learning disorders Educational Psychology – try to help students learn by focusing on class planning and instructional methods.  Focus on the entire school, not a single child

Major Fields in Psychology Developmental Psychology – study physical, cognitive, social and personality development across a lifespan  Cognitive – mental changes from childhood to adulthood (learning right from wrong)  Social – relationship with peers, parental bonding  Personality – self esteem Experimental Psychology – conduct research into basic processes like the learning, motivation, and the nervous system.  Look into the biological and psychological reasons for behavior

Applied Field of Psychology Industrial/Organizational Psychology – study the relationship between people and their work environment  Organizational – study the behavior of people in organizations, like law firms  Industrial – focus on people and work  Hired by corporations to improve working conditions and increase worker output

Class Activity Get into groups of four (4) and review the textbook/class notes description of the major fields (this means careers) of psychology Work with your partners to create a collage illustrating the major fields of psychology. You can use, words, or your own drawings On the back of your collage, include an explanation of how each image/word is relevant BE CREATIVE!!!
