Why do we need RDA? Why now? ALLUNY Annual Meeting September 29,2012

Resource Description Access “It isn’t enough for RDA to merely describe the “there” – it needs to provide a bridge from here to there.” RDA list: RDA-L

Environment has changed  computerized and networked world  interactive world  network and analog worlds co-exist  born digital resources

AACR2 no longer is effective  out of date  revisions upon revisions  fixing does not work

Changing perspectives expands our service to users  improve library community’s goals  supports resource discovery  emphasize data relationships  user tasks important  independent functioning data

Data locked inside library catalogs  breaks down data  data mining potential  visible and operational  evolving

Isolated library community  no bias  international  share  flexible  FRBRize

Summary Why do we need a new standard to follow?  Environment has changed  AACR2 no longer is effective  Changing perspectives expands our service to users  Data locked inside library catalogs  Isolated library community

Thank you Donna Movsovich
