Howard Gardner Theory of Multiple Intelligences Sara Dell roanoke.edu

Objective Students will learn about the Theory of Multiple Intelligences developed by Howard Gardner, and how to apply the theory to technology in the classroom. Students will take a short quiz on the main points of this theory and its application to technology, to ensure understanding for ability to apply it in their teaching.

What is the Theory of Multiple Intelligences ? – Gardner’s theory suggests that there are eight different types of intelligences – Everyone embodies these intelligences – Our surroundings and life experiences determine which intelligences are stronger or weaker – Each of the eight intelligences highlights a different way in which one may learn and problem solve. Go back to review

What are the eight intelligences? Verbal/linguistic intelligence Logical-mathematical intelligence Spatial intelligence Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence Musical intelligence Naturalist intelligence Interpersonal intelligence Intrapersonal intelligence

What are the eight intelligences? Verbal/linguistic intelligence – Individuals strengths are in language, written, and oral skills. They are better at understanding others and can easily convey what is on his or her mind. Logical-mathematical intelligence – Individuals are able to easily understand principles of systems and are able to conduct mathematical operations. Go back to review

What are the eight intelligences? Spatial intelligence – Individuals are able to visualize third- dimensional problems and solve them internally. Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence – Individuals are able to use their body in solving problems by, creating or making a solution, or expressing through performance.

What are the eight intelligences? Musical intelligence – Individuals are able to recognize patterns audibly and can use the patterns to better help solve problems Naturalist intelligence – Individuals are able to understand and respond to all things in nature such as plants and animals.

What are the eight intelligences? Interpersonal intelligence – Individuals are best at understanding others and helping them solve problems Intrapersonal intelligence – Individuals are self-aware

Applying this theory in the classroom The basic use of this theory in the classroom is to first use a variety of learning activities to encompass all intelligences in the classroom. By supporting student learning in their area of strengths, you can help them apply it to their area(s) of weakness. Go back to review

Applying this theory to technology in the classroom In the same sense that we should vary our learning activities to apply the Theory in the classroom, we should do the same with technology. Each intelligence can use a different form of technology to its advantage.

Applying this theory to technology in the classroom Verbal/linguistic intelligence – Using the internet to conduct research – Using tools such as PowerPoint to create presentations for explanation, or Word to create a written document Logical-mathematical intelligence – Using interactive whiteboards to solve a problem – Using programs like Excel to store data and create charts and graphs Go back to review

Applying this theory to technology in the classroom Spatial intelligence – Using CAD programs for design – Making a video or short film (director) Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence – Interactive video games – Making a video or short film (actor)

Applying this theory to technology in the classroom Musical intelligence – Using a recording to present information – Using programs such as Garage Band Naturalist intelligence – Using interactive video games – Using Excel to store data

Applying this theory to technology in the classroom Interpersonal intelligence – Using PowerPoint or Publisher for presentations – Using on line tools for class questionnaires Intrapersonal intelligence – Creating an on line blog or journal – Using the internet to conduct research
