Welcome to ss Find your seat !

Get to know the room Where can I find paper, sharpener, pencil if I forgot my own ? Where is the garbage ? Recylcing? What do I do when I have missed class ? Can I listen to my iPod ? What is the fire exit ? What is my teacher’s name ? What do I do with my cell phone ?

Class rules Choose a candy bar( no peeking) DO NOT eat it YET ! Once everyone has a bar, get up and find others who have the same bar as you. Discuss how you wish to be treated in the classroom. Write on the chart paper 3 class rules. Then go sit down at your seat and eat your bar We will discuss each group’s answer together.

Mapping activity There are 4 major parts of a map 1) map title 2) compass rose 3) key of legend 4) scale

The compass rose Actually has 32 points but mostly we see 4 to 8the word rose is used because it resembles a flower Typically north is at the top

May key or legend Maps use symbols to represent real objects. A key or legend is used to tell what the symbols mean.

scale Maps are made to scale. The scale explains the ratio of distances on the map to distances on the ground. For example 1 cm might mean 1 km
