The Skeletal System: The Framework

3 Main Purposes of the Skelton 3 main purposes To shape and support your body To protect the organs To work with the muscular system to move body parts.

2 minor purposes: The Factory and a Storehouse 1.Making blood cells 2.A warehouse for fat cells, calcium, and other minerals.

What is the Skeletal System made up of? 1.Bones 2.Cartilage 3.Ligaments 4.Joints

Bone  There are 206 bones in and adult  The largest bone is the femur bone, located in the thigh.  The smallest bones are in the ear: hammer, anvil, and stirrup

Ligaments  Ligaments are a connective tissue that connects bone to bone

Cartilage  Cartilage is found at the end of many bones, nose, and ears. –It protects bones. –It acts like a shock absorber. –It gives shape w/ flexibility to your body.

What Kind of Joint is This? 1.Ball and Socket 2.Hinge Joint 3.Pivot Joint 4.Fixed Joint 5.Gliding Joint  Head and arms  Wrist and spine  Skull  Hips and shoulder  Elbows and knees

Activity 1 How much do your bones weigh in your body?  (W x 35)/100= Approximate weight of your bones.  What is the %?

Activity 2 Index Cards  Make a bone by folding the index card in one of the following ways: –Group 1: folded like a tent –Group 2: Folded in a square “tube” –Group 3: folded in a round “tube”, using short sides –Group 4: folded in a round “tube”, using the long sides.

Activity 2 continue  Count the number of books you can stack on your bone.  Determine which type of bone will support the most weight.  Where would you want this type of bone in your body?  Where wouldn’t you want this type of bone?  Why?
