What is a Preposition? Fun Fact: There are around 100 prepositions in the English language. Rule: A preposition relates a noun or pronoun to another word in a sentence. -A preposition usually indicates the temporal (time), spatial (where) or logical relationship of its object to the rest of the sentence. *In this way, prepositions provide extra information and thus make writing clearer and more descriptive. Example: I always have the best time. (But where, when, why?) I always have the best time at school. The preposition at relates the word school to time, specifying that the writer has fun at school.

What is a Prepositional Phrase? A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun. The noun or pronoun that follows the preposition is called the object of the preposition. Example) The moon goes around Earth. A prepositional phrase can act just like an adjective. It answers one or both questions; what kind of or which is it. Example) I want a pencil with a big eraser! It can act like an adverb, too, and answer some questions for me. And when it does it will tell when or where, how, why, to what degree. Example) My favorite Taylor Swift CD plays in the background.

Where To Use a Prepositional Phrase You can use them in the front. You can use them in the back. You can use them in the middle. Or when you write a paragraph. Example) The stars are bright against the blackness of space. Against the blackness of space, the stars are bright. Avoid a common mistake! Avoid ending a sentence in a preposition! This is because a preposition should sit before a noun. *Reword your sentence to avoid this error! That is a solution I had not thought of. (Grammatically Incorrect) That is a solution of which I had not thought. (Awkward) That is a solution I had not considered. (Correct)
