Presentation transcript:

Tissues  Complex animals like humans are made up of many different kinds of cells with different structures and functions Tissue: a group of cells with similar structure and function

Types of Animal Tissues 1) Epithelial Tissue: line the body surface and internal organs  functions: act as a protective barrier, may secrete or absorb materials There are FOUR types of animal tissues: 2) Muscle Tissue: designed to change their shape by lengthening or shortening  functions: allow movement of limbs and walls of internal organs (eg. Stomach)

3) Nervous Tissue: made of cells called neurons with long finger-like projections  functions: receive, send signals and coordinate body actions 4) Connective Tissue: made of cells surrounded in some sort of matrix (liquid, mineral, elastic)  functions: strengthens, connects and supports the body

Assignment: Animal Tissue Scavenger Hunt Your quest is to correctly identify and determine the specific function of NINE different types of tissue cells found in the human body! You will be given THREE minutes at each station to correctly identify each mystery tissue and to complete the description of its function!
