LCFT Delegate/Council Leader Guidance Document Internal and Confidential

Because we don’t want what happened in Wisconsin to happen here Bruce Rauner is running for Governor to dismantle your Union

Considers himself to have “humble beginnings” and be a simple, common sense man who worked “really hard” to be successful… Raised in Deerfield, IL (b. 1957); Father was an attorney & Sr. VP at Motorola Dartmouth (Economics) / Harvard (MBA) Enjoys wearing rugged clothing and an $18 watch if it helps smooth image PURCHASING POWER: Earned $53 million in 2012 Net worth estimated near one billion Owns many properties:  Winnetka Mansion on ½ Acre  Two units (one penthouse) in luxury high-rise in Chicago  Home in the Florida Keys  Ranch in Montana  Ranch in Wyoming  Utah ski condo  $10 million New York Penthouse overlooking Central Park Spent over $6 Million of his own fortune to win the March Primary (raised an additional $8 million from pals)

 Rauner is running for Governor to dismantle teachers’ unions & your profession and to silence your voice  Rauner has cited union-buster Scott Walker (WI) as his role model. Like him, he supports right- to-work (for less) laws which result in loss of wages, benefits, and workplace protections  Rauner’s “budget” would force dramatic cuts to education, laying off one out of every six teachers and forcing local communities to raise property taxes just to keep schools open

KEY ISSUESGovernor Pat QuinnBillionaire Bruce Rauner Collective Bargaining Supports the rights of teachers and public employees to collectively bargain and strike. Huge supporter of so-called “education reform” groups like Stand for Children. In fact, he encouraged them to organize in Illinois, where they pushed to take away teachers’ right to strike. Education Funding Budget avoided cuts to education and increased funding for early childhood and higher education. “Budget” would force dramatic cuts to education and public services, layoffs, and property tax hikes by local communities to stay afloat. Public Schools Supports investing in public schools. Supports expanding charter schools. Minimum Wage Wants to raise it to more than $10/hour and believes no one working 40 hours a week should be living in poverty. Made more than $53 million in 2012 but said he was “adamantly, adamantly” opposed to an increase in Illinois. In fact, he actually supports lowering the minimum wage!

RtW (for less)  decreased dues (no fair share)  decreased membership  weaker/non- existant union  elimination of contract/rights  decrease in professional voice  substantial decrease in salary/pay/benefits (think WI/Kim Kohlhaas speech)  elimination of the middle class

 Concerns with recent FOIA requests being sent to districts  LCFT and council leaders need a way to contact our members when crisis situations emerge Personal /Phone Drive Goals Consider having a point-person for this campaign  By Sept. 30 th Exec. Board Mtg—Each Council will strive for 25% completion  By Dec. 9 th Exec. Board Mtg—Each Council will strive for 50% completion  By Feb. 25 th Exec. Board Mtg—Each Council will strive for 75% completion  By May 19 th Exec. Board Mtg—Each Council will strive for 100% completion When you reach out to your members in hallway conversations for this information, it is a great time to encourage them to get out and vote in the upcoming election

2014 Election Schedule  Last day to register to vote (traditional): ◦ Tuesday, October 7, 2014  (Grace Period Registration and Voting (provisional ballots): Wed. 10/08/14-Tues. 11/04/14)  Early Voting: ◦ Monday, October 20, Sunday, November 2, 2014  GENERAL ELECTION: ◦ Tuesday, November 4, 2014 **Delegates—please post the provided Voter Registration Information on your Union Bulletin Boards in every building** We know we can’t outspend Rauner, but we can change the trajectory of this election by sheer numbers of voters we can reach. Go to the polls, get your members to the polls, and get your families to the polls!!!

 You might be saying, “my members won’t vote for Quinn, and I don’t blame them.” Understandable. But one of these candidates will be Governor. During these difficult economic times, Quinn hasn’t been our best friend. However, Rauner is out for our very existence. Rauner is set on making our union—our collective voice—extinct.

 Get personal s/phone numbers from your members  Hold a general membership meeting between now and Sept. 30 th where you share information with your members about the importance of this election and the disaster we will face if Rauner is elected  Make sure YOU, your members, and all of your households get out to vote and vote for Quinn
