What is Viacom? Short for “video and audio communications” is a leading global entertainment content company

What is Viacom? The original Viacom began as CBS films, inc. in 1952 In 1970 CBS films, inc. was “spun-off” (or split) and renamed Viacom

History 1971 On June 4, 1971, Viacom completes the spin- off from Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., (CBS) and establishes itself as a public company.

History 1983 Viacom forms a joint venture with Warner Communications inc. “Showtime/The Movie Channel”. – This meant that “Showtime” and “the movie channel” were merged creating “Showtime/The Movie Channel”.

History 1985 – Viacom obtains 66% of MTV Networks 1986 – The rest of MTV Networks are purchased for $185,000

History 1994 – Viacom completes a $9.9 billion merger with Paramount Communications Inc.

History 2000 – Viacom completes a $39.8 billion merger with CBS Corporation

History 2001 – Acquisition of BET is completed for $3 billion
