 MCC.4.NF.3 Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b.  a. Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.

 A fraction is part of a whole.  Vocabulary - denominator- total number of parts - numerator- the part taken from the whole - mixed number- a whole number plus a fraction.

 Improper fractions- when the numerator is bigger than the denominator.  Proper fraction- when the numerator is smaller than the denominator.  Mixed number- a whole number plus a fraction.  Equivalent- when two fractions with different numerators and denominators are equal.

 ½- proper fraction  2 ¼ - mixed number  2/4 – proper fraction- equivalent  4/3 – improper fraction  3/3- this equals 1 whole

 Adding or subtracting fractions is adding to and taking away from the same whole.  So ….. You cannot add or subtract fractions with different denominators.  You make sure that the fraction has a common denominator, and then you can add the numerators.  When adding fractions you do not add denominators.

 ¼ + 2/4 = ¾  ½ + ¾ = 5/4 = 1 ¼  3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6  1/3 + 1/6 = 3/6 = ½
