Presentation transcript:

+ Actions undertaken by individuals and groups in maintaining healthy and sustainable environments in contemporary Australian society.

+ What you need to be able to do: Identify actions and considerations used by individuals and groups Evaluate how these actions and individuals assist in maintaining healthy natural environments Evaluate the effectiveness of these actions and consideration

+ Ecological Sustainable development

+ Individuals What actions can you do? How does this assist to maintain healthy natural environments Is this effective??

+ What actions do I undertake to act in a sustainable way? Car pool to work, by travelling to work with work makes it ensures that as a group we are reducing the amount of gas emissions that we are emitting and decreases the impact that we have on the atmosphere in regards to climate change. Another way that I have decreased the amount of carbon emissions that I am responsible for is by changing light globes to energy saving globes and ensuring that new appliances that I buy are energy efficient. I ensure that I look at the energy efficient labels and research on the internet to inform my choice.

+ Groups: Green building design (Text) Integrated farming (where livestock and crop production are combined) Renewable energy Aqua culture Eco tourism

+ VISY Sustainable actions: - 98% of packaging is recyclable (helps others be more sustainable) - Every tonne of VISY’s recyclable boxes savs 412kg of Co2 - Reduced water useage at pulp factory; most water efficient pulp mill in the world - Use of treated water - Environmental program – enviromanics educating primary school students - Construction of clean energy plants (reducation of energy consumption and use of renewable energy) - Reduced energy consumption by 1.2 million megawatts of power - Invested in research, innovation and investment in to best practice regarding sustainability

+ DEECD New buildings that are constructed at DEECD has a range of sustainable guidelines that they have to follow. This is evident in the new buildings that have been built at Maffra Secondary college. These buildings have been built in such a way that they use the natural resource of the sun as a heating and cooling method, rather than relying solely on gas heaters and air conditioning. These buildings are also fitted with electrical timers and sensors that ensure lights are not on when they are not needed. These actions have drastically reduce the reliance that the school (as part of DEECD) has on electricity and the the consequent carbon emissions that are caused. The new buildings also collect rainwater to flush the toilets and use on the gardens that surround the buildings, reducing the amount of water that are used for items that do not require fresh water.
